Available to order right now, Amazon has slashed the price of the 7th generation 2019 iPad. This is Apple’s entry-level tablet, not quite as flashy or luxurious as the iPad Air or iPad Pro, but it’s still a very capable machine. This is a 9-month-old revision of the tablet, released towards the end of 2019, and it will likely be supported by Apple and developers on their App store for years to come.

It features a Touch ID fingerprint sensor for biometric security, rather than the Face ID face unlock adopted by the iPad Pro and newer iPhone. Perhaps not as convenient or quick, but it will work even if you’ve got a face mask on.

The A10 Fusion processor powering this device is a few generations behind the latest chips powering newer Apple devices, and it can’t match the A13 Bionic chip for raw performance, but it’s still very capable. For typical tablet usage it will be perfectly fine, but you may want to think about getting a more powerful iPad if you want to do intensive tasks like video editing or high-performance gaming.

Perhaps the biggest drawback is frustrating minor incompatibilities. Apple has moved over its iPad Pro devices to charging via the industry-standard USB-C port, but other devices like this iPad and all of their current iPhone lineup use a Lightning connector for charging and for data transfers. Having to use several different charging cables for your different devices, or even just carrying a suite of dongles with you when on the go is a minor headache, and not enough reason to avoid buying this great tablet at a generous discount, but we do wish Apple would get their house in order and shift all their devices to using the same charging cable format.

Fortunately, this iPad does feature a 3.5mm headphone port, which has been disappearing from some devices, so you can easily connect your headphones directly to this tablet for wired audio playback. It also has full Bluetooth support for wireless audio playback too, if you prefer that.

These are lovely tablets, and arguably iPadOS plus Apple hardware offers the best experience of any tablet available today. This would be a great choice for anyone wanting a portable machine for videos, browsing the web, checking emails, and playing games.

Order this iPad today, and Amazon will ship it to you when it comes back in stock on June 14th.

Apple iPad (2019) [32GB] - $249.99 delivered
Apple iPad (2019) [128GB] - $329.99 delivered

Standard retail price is $329 and $429 respectively, so these are pretty good prices. Note that this particular discount is only available on the Space Gray color option.

There are rumors of revamped iPads for 2020 being in Apple’s plans, but with all the supply chain disruption, restrictions of global physical retail, and general uncertainty going forward, these could very easily be delayed. In the meantime, this is an excellent deal. Unless you’re absolutely certain you won’t need the full 128GB of the larger capacity model, we recommend opting for that, since there is no way to upgrade the storage of an iPad, you’re locked into the storage it ships with.
