Starting today, and running until June 25th, WB Games are giving away Injustice: Gods Among Us for free. These games are made by Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios, and they are very much the answer to the question “what if Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman stood side-on from each other and started punching and kicking each other like they were in Mortal Kombat?”

You can grab the PC version of this game from Steam for absolutely free, and it’s yours to keep. Note that it’s the “Ultimate Edition” you’re getting there, which adds a bunch of extra characters and skins compared to the base version.

In addition to making the game free on PC, WB has also made it available gratis on Playstation and Xbox. Grab the PS4 version from the Playstation Store, and grab the Xbox 360 version from Xbox Live. There never was a native Xbox One version of the game, but the 360 version is playable on newer Xbox consoles via the backward compatibility program.

I didn’t particularly get on with this game when I tried it when it first came out. I think the character designs and animations left a lot to be desired, which is an area that NetherRealm has greatly improved since 2013. I also kind of feel like the brutal level of violence in these games is far more at home in Mortal Kombat than it is in the world of DC characters. It never quite sat right with me to see the likes of Superman and The Flash taking pleasure in inflicting pain, especially with how this game dwells on the violence. It’s not a badly made game by any means, and the violence is toned down somewhat compared to the comedic levels they take it to with Mortal Kombat, but something to bear in mind if you think you might be sensitive toward that.

You’ve got until June 25th to take advantage of this giveaway, so don’t delay. I wonder what NetherRealm might be working on next? The released Mortal Kombat 11 last year, and Injustice 2 in 2017.

My dream project for this studio would be some kind of movie monster focussed fighting game. They could pull in some of the guest characters that have appeared in their previous games, like Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, The Terminator, Robocop, The Predator, etc. They could add a few monsters from various different WB movies like Beetlejuice, Jack Torrance, Detective Alonzo Harris, Agent Smith. Then they could pad out the roster with a few public domain characters like Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, and Frankenstein's Monster. Seems like a potentially solid lineup for a fighting game to me. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they do next, maybe they’re going to stick to the Injustice then Mortal Kombat then Injustice again cycle, or maybe they’re going to try something different next.
