Fast & Furious: Crossroads gameplay trailer

This new trailer for the upcoming Fast & Furious action racing game gives us a pretty decent idea of what to expect. They have opted for a racing game that skews more towards car combat than just crossing the finish line. In this trailer we see sequences like a vehicular shootout with a massive hovercraft, using wheel spikes to take out a tank, and going off-road in an attempt to outrun a rockslide.

For those unfamiliar with the movie series, the first entry is about driving some cars around and a plot to steal some VCRs, and the latest entry features genetically enhanced super-soldiers and an evil megacorporation bent on bringing about global armageddon. You might get whiplash from watching them all back to back, but it will be quite the ride if you do.

This latest gameplay trailer perhaps even serves to tease us about what could be coming for the future of the film series. Long-running writer Chris Morgan has suggested that he would be open to taking the series into space, the trailer for the upcoming ninth installment in the movie series heavily features a rocket car, and now this new gameplay trailer for Fast & Furious: Crossroads culminates with Dominic “Quarter Mile” Toretto jumping onto a giant rocket ship in his trademark Dodge Charger. It’s hard not to believe La Famiglia are going to space at some point. Maybe they’re holding off taking things interplanetary for the tenth movie in the series.

So far they’ve confirmed that the game will feature Letty, Dom & Roman, but it’s not yet clear if they plan to include any of the other central characters from the film series. I feel if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was going to be there, then the marketing would have led with that.

Interestingly, they’ve also cast Sonequa Martin-Green (The Walking Dead, Star Trek: Discovery) and Asia Kate Dillon (Billions, John Wick 3) in this game, but neither of them has appeared in the movies so far. Could this be a hint of their inclusion in the movie series going forward? Perhaps for the upcoming female-led spinoff?

Whilst the game is primarily developed by Slightly Mad Studios, known for their work on the Project Cars games and several entries in the Need for Speed series, also involved is Vin Diesel’s own Tigon Studios, a studio founded by Vin Diesel himself to work on games featuring his likeness, such as The Chronicles of Riddick & Wheelman.

The game doesn’t look like it’s the most slick and polished game out there, graphically it’s perhaps a few years out of date. But it still looks plenty of fun, and it’s the kind of licensed movie game that we don’t really see much of these days, where most properties like this just stick to mobile games. How worth your time this is going to come down to how it feels to race, smash and shoot, and how interesting and varied the different scenarios are.

Fast & Furious: Crossroads is due for release on August 7th later this year, and it’s going to be on PC and consoles.
