Fix Windows 10 Error 0x80070002 – Version 1903

Away with you, pesky Windows Update error

Windows Update errors are annoying, and also sometimes also leave you vulnerable to security issues that may arise between patches.

Unfortunately, it’s not always as straightforward as we’d like when it comes to updating. What should just be something that occurs in the background can, and does go wrong leaving you to sort out the whole mess for yourself.

Let’s have a look at what it means if your Windows install starts complaining of Error 0x80070002.

What is Error 0x80070002 and how to fix it

This is another of those Windows 10 error codes that flares up when you are updating. It simply means (although doesn’t simply say!) that an update is failing to install.

You can generally get around it by updating manually or via the Windows Update Troubleshooter app which we have talked about before.

Here though we will look at manually updating Windows, which involves also manually deleting the rubbish the failed install has left behind itself.

Type Services.msc into the Windows Search box and right-click the Services app result and pick Run as Administrator.

The Service window will open. Now you need to look for the Windows Update service and stop it.

Next, head to File Explorer and go to this folder.

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Delete EVERYTHING in the download folder.

Go back to the Services window (if you have closed it simply repeat the steps above to get it back). Start Windows Update service again.

Now go to the Settings app and the Update &* Security group. Select the Windows Update tab and check for new updates and install anything that it says is available and hopefully this time it won’t error out again.
