Former Microsoft Exec and Xbox Co-Founder J. Allard is back on the scene with Intellivision Amico

This is a big deal for me for several reasons. As you may know, I’m a huge retrogamer and my first console was the original Mattel Intellivision way back in 1980. I’ve also followed Microsoft and console gaming throughout the years so when Intellivision Entertainment just announced the legendary co-founder of Xbox J. Allard had joined the setup as global Managing Director I nearly fell off my chair.

The company is set to launch the Intellivision Amico later this year aimed at giving families a console they can play with together and it has already had two very successful rounds of pre-orders with the limited edition versions of the machine all being snapped up in short order.

I spoke with Intellivision Entertainment’s CEO Tommy Tallorico a few months back about the building excitement. He and I have worked in the industry a long time and a quick google of Tommy will show you that not only did he design the music for many popular games such as Aladdin, Cool Spot and Earthworm Jim he is also responsible for for the orchestral/rock shows Video Games Live which is pretty much constantly touring the globe (until recently obviously) and hold several Guinness World Records for audience numbers and the like – oh and he’s also Steven Tyler from Aerosmith’s cousin!

Tommy was so sure of the Amico’s success back then and he seems to have used his magic on Allard to bring him on board in a huge coup pre-launch.

Tommy said: “We are thrilled to add such an amazing industry legend to our team. J’s experience, like-minded vision and leadership in technology and video game industries as a visionary, product designer, and gamer will further strengthen the innovation legacy at Intellivision

Allard said: “Amico’s vision speaks to me, not just because I grew up with Intellivision, but because I grew up playing with my family and friends,” said J Allard. “Playing together is a timeless concept that I feel the video game industry has largely forgotten. The Intellivision team is deeply committed to bringing back shared fun and affordable gaming for everyone.”

Intellivision Amico is planned to release beginning in October and pricing for the system starts at $249.
