Garmin services go down thanks to ransomware attack

It’s been almost a day and Garmin fitness products are still not functioning correctly due to a major outage that most are speculating is due to a ransomware attack. This issue is affecting most of their wearable devices, apps, and call centers, providing a huge knock-on effect around the globe.

In a theory posed by ZDNET, they implied that Garmin was in fact the target of a ransomware attack that locked the company’s production systems. While there’s been no comment from Garmin’s end on this, a number of employees have spoken out suggesting WastedLocker was the strain of ransomware that affected internal infrastructure and their Taiwan-based factories are responding to a “virus” that put their facilities in ‘maintenance’.

While there was no comment on the ransomware theories, the company gave this vague update in a tweet as well as on the Garmin Connect website:

“We are currently experiencing an outage that affects Garmin.com and Garmin Connect. This outage also affects our call centers, and we are currently unable to receive any calls, emails or online chats,”

For you Garmin device owners out there we hope you get full-functionality back soon, how else are you going to get access to your fitness stats?!
