International Business Machines Corp (IBM) has announced its newest processor chip for data centres: the Power10 chip.
According to Reuters, the Power10 chip will be able to handle “three times the workload of its predecessor,” and has been designed specifically for the use of businesses inside data centres. The Power10 chip will be able to work on artificial intelligence computer tasks up to “20 times faster than its predecessor than its previous generation of chip”.
IBM’s Power10 chip will be manufactured by Samsung Electronics, using the company’s 7-nanometer chip manufacturing process.
In terms of competitors, IBM has Intel Corp to deal with. As Reuters reports, “Both IBM and AMD use outside chip factories to compete against Intel Corp, the dominant provider of central processor chips in data centers and one of the few players left that both designs and manufactures its own chips.
“Intel recently said its next generation of manufacturing technology faces delays, which analysts believe will allow its rivals to gain market share”.
With a dominant focus on high-performance computing systems, (and three of the world’s top-ten fastest supercomputers using its chips), there’s little doubt that this chip will succeed.
