Following a leak of the newest Microsoft console by Thurrott yesterday, the company confirmed the Xbox Series S in a tweet. The company boasted “next-gen performance in the smallest Xbox ever,” and confirmed the console will be coming in at just $299, the price that had already been leaked.
While they didn’t give too much away, we got a good first look at the console itself. It’s white and definitely small – too small for a disc drive, in fact, as the leak suggested – and looks like it’s meant to be used in a traditional horizontal position.
The $299 price point is set to undercut Sony’s PlayStation 5 which will launch later in the year and Windows Central said there might be a $25 per month “Xbox all access financing option.” They also said the Series S (codenamed Lockhart) is set to be released alongside the Xbox Series X (codenamed Anaconda) on November 10, with the latter apparently retailing at $499 or with a $35 per month financing option.
The Verge reported that the Series S will have, “7.5GB of usable RAM, a slightly underclocked CPU speed, and around 4 teraflops of GPU performance,” and is expected to be marketed towards 1080p and 1440p gaming. It’s doubtful it will be able to run modern titles in 4K resolution but, for the price, it looks like a fair trade off.
