Nvidia joins super consortium against Covid-19

Tech companies around the globe are joining forces in the fight to beat COVID-19 and using a wealth of processing power to aid the research into finding a vaccine as soon as possible.

On Monday, Nvidia announced it has joined the COVID-19 High-Performance Computing Consortium and has challenged its task force of scientists to aid the battle against the novel coronavirus, which has wreaked havoc in its three-month epidemic party around the world.

The GPU giant will use its AI to help the consortium process data much faster as well as optimizing the group’s supercomputers.

Nvidia’s head of accelerated computing Ian Buck will lead the operation, and he compared the current research to the Space race in the mid-20th century: “Not a race to the moon, this is a race for humanity. The rocket ships are GPU supercomputers, and their fuel is scientific knowledge,” Buck said. “Nvidia is going to help by making these rockets travel as fast as they can,” he added.

Other consortium members include AMD, IBM, Amazon, Hewlett Packard, and Microsoft.
