If you weren’t already aware, the immensely popular VR company Oculus is owned by Facebook these days. And Facebook just accidentally leaked the Oculus Quest 2. Not the best move, especially when it’s their own product.
The leaks come from an accidental upload of some Oculus Quest 2 supporting and promotional materials to the Facebook blueprint website, which have since been taken down (but are still accessible if you know where to look), and they give a pretty comprehensive rundown of the still-unannounced Oculus Quest 2 headset itself.
It is good news for us though, as we now have more information on what to expect from Oculus Quest 2 when it launches. First, we can start with the design. As we were all expecting, the brand new Oculus Quest 2 will feature a brand new and more comfortable design – which is no real news, because every single time a VR company looks to update their product catalog, user-friendliness and comfort levels are always near the top of priorities.
The Snapdragon XR2 also enables seven concurrent cameras for precise motion tracking – which is obviously a huge boost when it comes to Oculus Quest 2’s usability and combined with the Snapdragon XR2’s ability to support up to 8K video at 60fps, users can expect a lot when it comes to the Oculus Quest 2’s official capabilities.
As far as the actual video capabilities of the Oculus Quest 2, we were lucky enough to get actual output leaks. The Oculus Quest 2 will be offering an ‘almost 4K experience’, with the user receiving up to a native 2K resolution per eye when they are using the headset – one of the leaked videos also confirmed that the Oculus Quest 2 will also feature 50% more pixels than the previous Oculus Quest screen.
The Quest 2 was also confirmed to support backward compatibility, and to feature updated controllers with ‘updated ergonomics’, whatever that means, and also that the Oculus Quest 2 will also be available in a 256gb version of the device. We also got confirmation that Oculus Link is still supported – but that’s as far as the main leaks go. We are still unsure of the pricing, availability, and release date of the Oculus Quest 2 – but it could be the case that we see more of the new VR device on Wednesday, as part of the Facebook Connect Dev conference.
There is no word yet on how Facebook plans to integrate itself into the headset, and with the news last month that Oculus users will have to use their devices via Facebook rather than a separate log in, there are plenty of Oculus owners who aren’t too happy with the social media giant at the moment – so hopefully further details on the capabilities and next stages of VR for the Oculus Quest 2 will smooth things over for Facebook.
