Get your Game Gear fix with this tiny handheld

Following the trend of retro consoles getting a re-release in mini form, Sega has just announced that their beloved 8-bit handheld system, the Sega Game Gear, is going to be revived in a similar fashion with a $50 micro variant.
As alluded to by its name, the Game Gear Micro sports a tiny form factor coming in at 80mm x 43mm x 20mm making it pretty much palm-sized, and even smaller than the small-scale Game Boy Micro released in 2005. The screen is similarly small being just 1.15 inches but if you’re willing to part with around $250 for a pack of all four consoles, Sega will bundle in a Big Window magnifying glass to alleviate some of your struggles. The Game Gear Micro will also feature a single mono speaker, headphone jack, and USB charging functionality. If you want to go old school, it can even run off two AAA batteries.
The Game Gear Micro comes in four colors – black, blue, yellow, and red with each of these having a different preloaded game library:
The black Game Gear Micro comes with:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Puyo Puyo 2
- Out Run
- Royal Stone
The blue Game Gear Micro comes with:
- Sonic Chaos
- Gunstar Heroes
- Sylvan Tale
- Baku Baku Animal
The yellow Game Gear Micro comes with:
- Shining Force Gaiden: Ensei – Jashin no Kuni he
- Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya
- Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
- Nazopuyo Aruru no Ru
And the red Game Gear Micro comes with:
- Revelations: The Demon Slayer
- Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special
- The GG Shinobi
- Columns
Unfortunately, the Game Gear Micro has only been announced for release in Japan so if you live in the West and want to get your hands on it you’re going to have to wait for an update from Sega. If you are in Japan, however, you can put a preorder in and expect it to ship October 6th.
