Spotify has announced its new video podcast feature, offering an alternative to YouTube. After signing huge and exclusive podcast deals with the likes of The Joe Rogan Experience and The Receipts Podcast, Spotify podcast has slowly become one of the most used features on my phone. Next to YouTube, that is.
Now Spotify has branched out to give select creators a space to film their podcasts and share them on the app. First of all, yes – both premium and free subscriptions facilitate the new feature. Even better? You can seamlessly transition between video and audio, meaning you won’t have to worry about pausing the video if you need to leave the app.
In a press release, Spotify said: “The creator-made videos will start automatically and sync immediately with your audio feed.
“If you’re multitasking between apps or want to lock your device during the episode, no worries: your audio will continue to play in the background with no interruption (and minimal data usage).”
The feature works across mobile and desktop and allows users to still download podcasts for offline listening.
This will benefit creators just as much as listeners, too. “…being able to publish directly on Spotify means creators will be able to connect more directly with podcast listeners, rather than having to compete on a broader platform which pits their shows against a wide variety of other content,” stated TechCrunch.
While creators may well still publish their videos on YouTube, this new development looks like a step in the right direction towards podcast paramountcy for Spotify.
