AMD Ryzen 5000 Series CPU Reveal (Including the Ryzen 9 5950X and Ryzen 9 5900X)

Today’s the day, after a number of leaks around naming, performance, and more, AMD has finally unveiled its Ryzen 5000 series CPUs to the world. We saw Dr. Lisa Su, AMD CEO, showcase the full processor lineup that includes the Ryzen 9 5950X, Ryzen 9 5900X, Ryzen 7 5800X, and Ryzen 5 5600X, as well as insight into how these chips will perform in today’s, and future games. We also got release dates for the whole 5000 series range, later than predicted a number of days ago, based on a few leaks that were floating around. Opening the event up was a timeline of the development of Zen CPUs as well as a nod to the PS5 and Xbox Series X which AMD processors power. Then, Mark Papermaster, CTO, went into the advantages over the 3000 series processors and how the 5000 series will provide lower latency, direct L3 cache access, and 19% IPC uplift.

Next up, we got the reveal of the Ryzen 9 5900X where we got a look at the chip in the flesh, sporting the trademark silver look and the boldly engraved Ryzen name on the top. There was also a deep dive into how the chips perform in gaming, showcasing a 28% uplift in Tomb Raider and potentially more in other popular titles.

The reason why this new Zen 3 architecture is such a big deal is that it provides such a big percentage increase over the previous 3000 series. But, a lot of people are questioning, and rightly so is, does this mean Ryzen 5000 series processors won’t fit in my current motherboard? Well, the answer is simple. If you have a motherboard that supports a Ryzen 3000 series chip yes, they will slot straight in, but if you’re still using an older motherboard, as you would expect, no, they won’t be compatible.

We then got the release dates of the whole Ryzen 5000 series which are set to go live on November 5th. An October 20th date was rumored to be the case about a week ago but it seems either those leaks we’re simply incorrect or there’s been a slight delay in the timeline. No matter what date it is though, we hope that the release of these CPUs goes much cleaner than others in recent times (we’re looking at you Nvidia).

We also got the cost of this new generation of processors. As always, AMD has pulled it out the bag putting up prices like $549 for the Ryzen 9 5900X which, when compared to Intel counterparts, is incredible value. The budget Ryzen 5 5600X option is, of course, like the Ryzen 5 3600X, a really impressive and attractive option for many coming in at $299, perfect for those wanting to build a low-cost gaming PC that’ll still be able to run the AAA games of today. The absolute top tier Ryzen 9 5950X isn’t too costly either considering the performance coming in at $799.
