Webcam review: Logitech StreamCam

Logitech has been the go-to brand for decent quality webcam for many a year now. Their C922 has been the mainstay of many a streamer and Twitch gamer for longer than you perhaps realise.

It’s 1080p crisp display has helped make a lot of people a lot of money as streaming exploded and it’s probably about time somebody tried to knock it off its perch.

That the company trying to do that is once again Logitech shows what a grip they have on the market already. The announcement of the StreamCam was met by muchos online excitement. Review models landed with popular streamers who gushed with praise about this new C922 beater.

Now it’s out there in the wild though, let’s have a proper look at it. Is it better? Should I upgrade if I already pack a C922? What’s changed. Let’s crack on.

Logitech StreamCam

New cam on the block

Max resolution: 1080p/60fps; 720p/60fps
Connection: USB-C 3.1
FoV: 78 degrees
Microphone: Stereo / Dual Mono
Vertical video: Yes

  • Outstanding face tracking
  • Crisp image quality
  • Solid software
  • Short cable
  • Not cheap

So what are we looking at? Well for starters for your money you get a cam that can shoot 60fps and 1080p. Due to its clever mount, it can also shoot that vertically or horizontally so if you are creating content for formats such as Instagram you are covered here.

You can also adjust the tilt so you could, for example, direct it towards your keyboard. There’s also an additional mount that lets you fit it to a standard tripod thread, so the world is your oyster.

Logitech has also enhanced their webcam software - Logitech Capture 2 includes filters, is now Mac compatible and it is pretty good at image automation - it will happily control your exposure and white balance, leaving you to get on with the task of looking good in front of the camera.

So far, so excellent but we do have a couple of gripes. It’s expensive for a camera and feels a bit like it is cashing in on the trend for everybody trying to make their fortunes online.

The C922 is very often on sale and while it is getting old in the tooth is still a remarkably good choice if you are just wanting to see if streaming is for you.

The second gripe won’t be a problem for everybody but the cable measures just 5 feet long so if you were looking at an extractant setup with it mounted in the corner of your room, you may have to think again.

All that said though it is the best webcam available for streaming. That goes without saying. And if it is around as long as it’s older siblings it will be money well spent.
